Here's The Importance Of The Sabbath - And Why We Should Keep It

SABBATH KEEPING

One of the most important and most over looked commandments today is Sabbath day keeping.

Today we have the seventh day Adventists who are the main advocates of this commandment, but this is not something supported by the scriptures. The Most High never said to set up church denominations related to specific parts of his Law (teachings).

Common defenses about not keeping the seventh day sabbath are –

1. “We keep every day Holy”
2. “We are no expected to keep all the commandments today”.
3. “Keeping all the commandments was for the people in that day”.
4. “We are saved by grace”
5. “The sabbath day is Sunday”?

and many others……….

But what do the scriptures say about the Sabbath day? Lets first see the significance of the Sabbath or Seventh day

Genesis 2:2-3

2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

We see that the Seventh day is blessed

Now Lets take a look at the 4th Commandment –

Exodus 20:8-11

8Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

9Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:

10But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

11For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

So the Most High has set apart (Hallowed) a day that we should REST on, this will help immensely if you are sincere about learning how to interpret the bible, this makes sense if we are to return back to, being in the image of the Father, he did not set it apart because he was tired.

Here is how we know the seventh day is Saturday, it was not until the 4th century ad that it was changed by man, here is information from the Papal(Catholic) Church, which is the apostate church discussed in Revelations –

The Council of Laodicea around A.D. 364 decreed 59 Canon laws. Here is the final law instituted by the Papal Church.

Canon XXIX:Christians must not judaize by resting on the Sabbath, but must work on that day, rather honouring the Lord’s Day; and, if they can, resting then as Christians. But if any shall be found to be judaizers, let them be anathema from Christ.” (Percival Translation).

Above it’s shown that Papal church formerly known as the Roman catholic church today, know that the real sabbath is not being being kept, but rather the first day which is traditionally called the Lord’s day, even though that is not what the scriptures say (the seventh day, today called Saturday is the Lord’s day).

Sun worship, “the day of the sun,” and “Sunday”

The Romans called the sun god “Mithra” and “Apollo,” and they especially worshiped the sun on “the first day of the week,” also called “Dies Solis” (Latin), which means, “day of the sun.” The name “Sunday” was adopted “because this day was anciently dedicated to the sun, or to its worship. The first day of the week.” Webster’s Dictionary; 1929 edition.

How to Keep the sabbath day

So lets find out how the sabbath was prepared for in the scriptures and the type of work we are not supposed to do –

Exodus 16:22-24

22And it came to pass, that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for one man: and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses.

23And he said unto them, This is that which the LORD hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.

24And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade: and it did not stink, neither was there any worm therein.

Exodus 35:3

Ye shall kindle no fire throughout your habitations upon the sabbath day.

Nehemiah 10:31

And if the people of the land bring ware or any victuals on the sabbath day to sell, that we would not buy it of them on the sabbath, or on the holy day:

So as we can see there was preparation in advance for the sabbath day, which is what we should do today, also no cooking is to be done on the sabbath and no buying or selling.

Blessings for honoring the Sabbath

Isaiah 58:13-14

13If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:

14Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it

Hope that helped you if you were not sure how the Sabbath is to be kept or if you were looking for more scriptures about the Sabbath.
