Mothers Day and Fathers Day a Brief History

The first thing to understand with mothers day and fathers day is that they are never mentioned in the bible. For those that say it is just a tradition, I would say that you should ask yourself whether you have been celebrating all the appointed days the Father has given us? (this is a question to get you thinking rather than to cast judgment)

In total you will find eleven appointed days that we are supposed to observe according to biblical interpretation throughout the year which are in honour of the Creator and not for men. If we include new moon celebrations there are a total of fifteen appointed days.

As a true believer or some one that wants to follow the ways of the Father, you have to ask your self, would the Father really want us to celebrate our mothers or fathers on a specific day?

Let’s remind our selves of what the Messiah said about keeping traditions above the laws of the Father, when he spoke to the Pharisees.

Matthew 15:1-9

1Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying,

2Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.

3But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?

4For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.

5But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;

6And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.

7Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,

8This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.

9But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

Clearly if we support the observance of mothers day, we should reconsider. Also on further reflection we see that during the time of what is called mothers day and fathers day, spring is beginning, which is the time when the New Moon for the New Year is supposed to be celebrated.

A Closer Look at the Mothers Day Celebration in Religion

If we look into the background of mothers day, it tends to have a different meaning to a number of different cultures (although what is the same, is that they are unbiblical celebrations). The date of the Mothers day celebrations also seem to have differing dates assigned to them too.

Today the world authorities for most celebrations come from the western perspective, and with closer inspection we can see the same thing here. Looking at the history of mothers day through the eyes of religion we see this day holding great significance with the Roman Catholic church, Eastern Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches.

In the aforementioned churches the Mothers day celebration is strongly associated with the celebration of the Virgin Mary. This should instantly raise alarm bells as it directly contradicts the laws of the Father

Exodus 20:4-6

4Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

5Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

6And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

If we look at the second commandment we can see that honouring the virgin Mary can easily be seen as a form of service to her, which is totally forbidden by the Father. Fortunately the Father is merciful and will forgive if this practice is stopped and we turn back to him.

Keep in mind that the tradition of mothers day by no means started in the church. In other countries and there different beliefs they also celebrated mothering Gods and still do to this day. They often tied this worship in to the new year, beginning it on a new moon around April (which is actualy when the God of Israel told Israel to celebrate the new year).

The hindu religion calls their mothers day “Mata Tirtha Aunshi” or “Mother Pilgrimage fortnight”.

Brief History of Fathers Day

The celebration of fathers day seems to be an extension of Mothers day, coming about mainly through traditions though, rather than the worship of any god. The tradition of Fathers day was established in 1913, with a bill being passed in congress in the US.

However harmless you may think that Mothers day and fathers day are, you should remember that they are not supported by the scriptures and is just another way of turning believers away from the true worship of the God.

Remember there is no greater way to celebrate your mother and father than to honour them as the Father has commanded us to do everyday, not just on one specific day.
